On a Monday night in early June, around 25 Hamiltonians, including myself, arrived at the Central Library. There were some awkward silences and light conversation as we waited for the night to begin. Even though we were of different ages and backgrounds, we all had one thing in common: we were going to perform in this year’s Dusk Dances!

In one way or another, this group had learned of the opportunity for non-dancers to be part of a performance called Incandescent, which includes professional dancers as well. So we volunteered; for different reasons: some wanted to take part in a community event, some wanted a chance to perform and most just love to dance.

Meredith Thompson and her fellow dancer, Kate Franklin, created Incandescent several years ago. They were touring with Dusk Dances and performing in Flesherton, Ont. That Dusk Dances included a community performance with locals of all different ages. This inspired Meredith and Kate to create the community dance Incandescent, which premiered in 2012.

Meredith has been guiding us through the choreography every week with her patience and contagious energy. Every Monday, we arrive at our rehearsal space and build on what we learned the week before.

“It’s really inspiring to see people play with movement and discover dance,” says Meredith.

At the first rehearsal, Meredith split us up into groups of four and gave us the words to Leonard Cohen’s Anthem. She asked us to create gestures to express the song lyrics, some of those gestures are being used at the beginning of the piece.

“Every time we take this piece to a new community, the group creates gestures for the first part of the dance,” says Meredith. “Over the years, the people Kate and I have worked on this piece have shaped it with their different ideas,” she added.

July is crunch time! We are at the half point for rehearsals, the professional dancers have joined us, and we are practising twice a week now.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Incandescent will be performed at Dusk Dances Hamilton taking place in Bayfront Park July 28, 29 and 30.
